Su carrera abarc\u00f3 diez a\u00f1os de producci\u00f3n, durante los cuales lanz\u00f3 al mercado cinco \u00e1lbumes, siendo la \u00fanica latina en producir todos sus discos simult\u00e1neamente en espa\u00f1ol e ingl\u00e9s con los cuales logr\u00f3 ser premiada con el premio Latin Grammy Award para mejor cantautor en 2004. Vendi\u00f3 alrededor de 30 millones de copias de sus \u00e1lbumes en espa\u00f1ol e ingl\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Soraya Raquel Lamilla Cuevas naci\u00f3 en 1969 en el Condado de Ocean, Nueva Jersey, un a\u00f1o despu\u00e9s de que su familia (sus padres y su hermano mayor) se mudara desde Colombia a los Estados Unidos. Posteriormente su familia fue forzada a regresar a Colombia, pero a los ocho a\u00f1os regres\u00f3 con ella a Nueva Jersey. Fue bautizada como Soraya, por ser un nombre muy com\u00fan en el Medio Oriente, y es la palabra hispana \u00e1rabe de \u201crica\u201d o &#8220;princesa&#8221;.3\u200b Esto \u00faltimo se explica ya que la rama materna de su familia es de origen cristiano liban\u00e9s que emigr\u00f3 desde el L\u00edbano hasta Colombia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">En Colombia, su madre Yamila Cuevas, era ama de casa. Pero al igual que su esposo, tuvo que trabajar muy duro una vez asentados en EE. UU. El padre de Soraya ten\u00eda que trabajar en tres o cuatro lugares con el fin de cumplir con los gastos de su hogar, a diferencia de cuando se encontraba en Colombia, trabajando para una empresa exportadora. Mientras crec\u00eda, no se le permiti\u00f3 hablar en ingl\u00e9s dentro de su casa, a instancias de su madre, para que conservara el dominio del idioma espa\u00f1ol. Si bien su padre hab\u00eda aprendido ingl\u00e9s mucho antes de emigrar a EE. UU. para mejorar la calidad de vida de su familia, su madre prefiri\u00f3 siempre hablar espa\u00f1ol, a pesar de que tambi\u00e9n dominaba el ingl\u00e9s, y siempre inculc\u00f3 eso en su hija. S\u00f3lo ten\u00eda doce a\u00f1os de edad cuando por primera vez le fue diagnosticado el c\u00e1ncer de seno a su madre.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tras una leve recuperaci\u00f3n, tuvo una reca\u00edda cuando ten\u00eda dieciocho, hasta que falleci\u00f3 cuatro a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s. En una entrevista, siendo ya conocida, afirm\u00f3 que el padecimiento de su madre cultiv\u00f3 su sentido de responsabilidad, al verse forzada por las circunstancias a ser m\u00e1s madura que las personas de su edad, por acompa\u00f1ar a su madre en su enfermedad y realizar los quehaceres del hogar. As\u00ed, fue con su madre al hospital cuando era necesario e investig\u00f3 con ella sobre el c\u00e1ncer de seno, llegando incluso a participar junto a ella en la Carrera por la Cura.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Se interes\u00f3 por primera vez en la m\u00fasica a la edad de cinco a\u00f1os, mientras escuchaba a su t\u00edo ejecutando el tiple en Colombia. Al ver su inter\u00e9s, sus padres le compraron una guitarra, con la cual aprendi\u00f3 sola a tocar ese mismo a\u00f1o. A la edad de nueve a\u00f1os, pas\u00f3 a dominar el viol\u00edn cl\u00e1sico y su primera presentaci\u00f3n musical en p\u00fablico fue como violinista en el Carnegie Hall de Nueva York. Cuando era estudiante de secundaria, empez\u00f3 a escribir sus propias canciones en espa\u00f1ol e ingl\u00e9s.
