Comenz\u00f3 su carrera art\u00edstica participando en diversos festivales y concursos radiales de canto, apoyada por su abuelo paterno. A los 15 a\u00f1os de edad (1959), con aprobaci\u00f3n de sus padres, particip\u00f3 en el espacio televisivo, hoy desaparecido, Primer aplauso que emit\u00eda el ente p\u00fablico Televisi\u00f3n Espa\u00f1ola.<\/div>\r\n

El tema que escogi\u00f3 era la canci\u00f3n tradicional La sombra vendo. Cerca de la estaci\u00f3n televisora, Luis Sanz, un cazatalentos madrile\u00f1o, quien ve\u00eda el programa, qued\u00f3 impactado por su talento y personalidad. Tanto fue as\u00ed, que Sanz se puso en contacto con la realizaci\u00f3n del programa para pedir el nombre y la direcci\u00f3n de la joven concursante. La conversaci\u00f3n entre Luis Sanz, quien era ya representante de varios artistas espa\u00f1oles famosos, y sus padres, fue decisiva en su futuro.<\/div>\r\n

Al cabo de una semana, los padres de Mar\u00eda de Los \u00c1ngeles dieron su aprobaci\u00f3n al empresario. Sanz decidi\u00f3 que la muchacha fuera puesta al cuidado de profesores particulares para terminar sus estudios de secundaria e iniciar los de canto, baile y actuaci\u00f3n. Al mismo tiempo que le revela los secretos de la profesi\u00f3n art\u00edstica, Sanz la pone en contacto en diversos eventos sociales con los artistas famosos de su \u00e9poca. Posteriormente se hizo muy amiga de su contempor\u00e1nea, Roc\u00edo Jurado y de Raphael a quien conoc\u00eda, pues en esa \u00e9poca viv\u00edan en el mismo barrio y a veces coincid\u00edan en concursos de radio.<\/div>\r\n

Como su nombre era poco adecuado para lanzarla al estrellato, Sanz ide\u00f3 llamarla Roc\u00edo. En una entrevista televisada Roc\u00edo cont\u00f3 que ese sobrenombre se lo puso su abuelo, pues le recordaba al roc\u00edo matutino.<\/div>\r\n

As\u00ed, Sanz debi\u00f3 haber recogido el sobrenombre de aquella costumbre familiar. Pero, pensando que le har\u00eda falta un \u00abapellido\u00bb, \u00e9l y la joven buscaron un mapa de Espa\u00f1a en el que ella se\u00f1al\u00f3 al azar la poblaci\u00f3n de D\u00farcal, en la provincia de Granada. Hab\u00eda nacido el sobrenombre con el cual logr\u00f3 su paso a la posteridad. M\u00e1s tarde, fue declarada Hija Adoptiva de esta poblaci\u00f3n y fue bautizada una calle en su honor.<\/div>\r\n

She began her artistic career by participating in various festivals and radio singing competitions, supported by her paternal grandfather. She later became close friends with her contemporary, Roc\u00edo Jurado, and Raphael whom she knew, because at that time they lived in the same neighborhood and sometimes coincided in radio contests.<\/div>\r\n

As her name was inappropriate to launch her to stardom, Sanz devised calling her Roc\u00edo. In a televised interview, Roc\u00edo said that this nickname was given to her by her grandfather, as she reminded her of morning dew.<\/div>\r\n

Thus, Sanz must have picked up the nickname of that family custom. But, thinking that she would need a “surname”, he and the young woman looked for a map of Spain in which she randomly indicated the town of D\u00farcal, in the province of Granada. The nickname with which she achieved the passage from her to posterity was born. Later, she was declared an Adoptive Daughter of this town and a street was named in her honor.<\/div>\r\n
