Conocido art\u00edsticamente como Camar\u00f3n de la Isla o simplemente Camar\u00f3n, fue un cantaor de etnia gitana espa\u00f1ol considerado por muchos como el mejor cantaor de flamenco contempor\u00e1neo y una de sus m\u00e1s importantes figuras.<\/div>\n

Hijo de Juana Cruz Castro y Juan Luis Monge N\u00fa\u00f1ez. Fue el sexto de una familia gitana muy humilde de ocho hijos que viv\u00eda en la Isla de Le\u00f3n, San Fernando, a escasos kil\u00f3metros de C\u00e1diz.<\/div>\n

Su t\u00edo Jose\u00edco fue quien le llam\u00f3 ‘camar\u00f3n’, porque adem\u00e1s de rubio y delgado, que parec\u00eda transparente, siempre andaba saltando de un lado para otro. Su padre muri\u00f3 joven y Juana, su madre, apenas daba abasto para sacar adelante tan numerosa familia.<\/div>\n

Curs\u00f3 estudios en el Colegio del Liceo, abandon\u00e1ndolos para ayudar a su padre en la fragua en la que trabajaba.<\/div>\n

Camar\u00f3n ya ganaba algunas pesetas cantando por la calle con tan solo siete a\u00f1os. Viaja a Madrid y act\u00faa en el tablao Torres Bermejas. En los billares de la plaza de Callao se junta con un guitarrista que hab\u00eda llegado de Algeciras, Paco de Luc\u00eda. De esta forma el destino uni\u00f3 a los dos mayores genios renovadores del flamenco. Su primer trabajo conjunto aparece en 1968.<\/div>\n

La trayectoria de Camar\u00f3n se puede definir en tres etapas: hasta el a\u00f1o 1968 sigue la tradici\u00f3n; hasta 1978, inicia la renovaci\u00f3n de su cante; a partir de 1979, refuerza sus aspectos m\u00e1s revolucionarios con el disco “La leyenda del tiempo”. En total public\u00f3 19 LPs y grab\u00f3 176 cantes: 43 buler\u00edas, 20 tangos, 18 fandangos… unos 50 palos, unos 500 estilos. De todos ellos s\u00f3lo hay 27 firmados por \u00e9l, lo que ha ocasionado lamentables litigios tras su muerte.<\/div>\n

Su fe religiosa fue siempre notoria, especialmente devoto del Nazareno, cuya imagen se venera en la Iglesia Mayor de San Fernando. “All\u00ed acudi\u00f3 Camar\u00f3n justo despu\u00e9s de la boda para casarse \u00e9l s\u00f3lo” -explica Manuel Ruiz, quien le acompa\u00f1\u00f3 aquel d\u00eda- vino a dec\u00edrselo al Nazareno y le habl\u00f3: “… Me he casado \u00bfte parece bien? Vengo p’a que me de tu bendici\u00f3n” y \u00e9l me coment\u00f3 que el Nazareno se la hab\u00eda dado…”. En 1976 contrajo matrimonio con Dolores Montoya, con la que tuvo cuatro hijos.<\/div>\n

El d\u00eda 2 de Julio de 1992, Jos\u00e9 Monge Cruz, Camar\u00f3n de la Isla, dejaba de existir. Falleci\u00f3 en Badalona (Barcelona) a los 41 a\u00f1os, a causa de un c\u00e1ncer de pulm\u00f3n. “Me gustar\u00eda que me enterraran en San Fernando” hab\u00eda declarado. Su deseo fue cumplido.<\/div>\n

En 1992 fue nombrado Hijo Predilecto de San Fernando. Es Medalla al M\u00e9rito Art\u00edstico del Ayuntamiento de Madrid. La Junta de Andaluc\u00eda le otorg\u00f3 su Medalla de Oro. El Gobierno de la Naci\u00f3n le concedi\u00f3 la Medalla de Oro en las Bellas Artes. Es Hijo adoptivo de la ciudad de La L\u00ednea de La Concepci\u00f3n.<\/div>\n

Jos\u00e9 Monje Cruz (San Fernando, C\u00e1diz, Spain, December 5, 1950-Badalona, Barcelona, Spain, July 2, 1992), artistically known as Camar\u00f3n de la Isla or simply Camar\u00f3n, was a singer of Spanish gypsy ethnicity considered by many as the best contemporary flamenco singer and one of its most important figures.<\/div>\n

Son of Juana Cruz Castro and Juan Luis Monge N\u00fa\u00f1ez. He was the sixth of a very humble gypsy family of eight children who lived on the Island of Le\u00f3n, San Fernando, a few kilometers from C\u00e1diz.<\/div>\n

His uncle Jose\u00edco was the one who called him ‘shrimp’, because in addition to being blond and thin, who seemed transparent, he was always jumping from one place to another. His father died young and Juana, his mother, barely had enough to support such a large family.<\/div>\n

He studied at the Colegio del Liceo, abandoning them to help his father in the forge where he worked.<\/div>\n

Camar\u00f3n was already earning a few pesetas singing in the street when he was only seven years old. He traveled to Madrid and performed at the Torres Bermejas tablao. At the billiards in the Plaza de Callao he meets a guitarist who had arrived from Algeciras, Paco de Luc\u00eda. In this way, fate brought together the two greatest renovating geniuses in flamenco. Their first joint work appears in 1968.<\/div>\n

Camar\u00f3n’s trajectory can be defined in three stages: until 1968 he continues the tradition; until 1978, he began to renew his cante; as of 1979, he reinforces his most revolutionary aspects with the album “Leyenda del tiempo”. In total, he published 19 LPs and recorded 176 cantes: 43 buler\u00edas, 20 tangos, 18 fandangos about 50 palos, about 500 styles. His religious faith was always notorious, especially a devotee of the Nazarene, whose image is venerated in the Iglesia Mayor de San Fernando. “Camar\u00f3n went there just after the wedding to get married by himself” explains Manuel Ruiz, who accompanied him that day- he came to tell the Nazarene and spoke to him: “… I’ve gotten married, is that okay? give me your blessing “and he told me that the Nazarene had given it to him”. In 1976 he married Dolores Montoya, with whom he had four children.<\/div>\n

On July 2, 1992, Jos\u00e9 Monge Cruz, Camar\u00f3n de la Isla, ceased to exist. He died in Badalona (Barcelona) at the age of 41, due to lung cancer. “I would like to be buried in San Fernando” he had declared. His wish was granted.<\/div>\n

In 1992 he was named Favorite Son of San Fernando. He is a Medal of Artistic Merit from the Madrid City Council. The Junta de Andaluc\u00eda awarded him its Gold Medal. The Government of the Nation awarded him the Gold Medal in Fine Arts. He is the adoptive son of the city of La L\u00ednea de La Concepci\u00f3n.<\/div>\n
