Su carrera tuvo comienzo actuando para la Radio Difusora de Colatina, en Esp\u00edrito Santo -localidad a donde su familia se hab\u00eda mudado-, interpretando melod\u00edas de Francisco Alves. Antes de cumplir la mayor\u00eda de edad emigr\u00f3 a R\u00edo de Janeiro, portando una carta de recomendaci\u00f3n destinada al compositor Jair Amorim, quien lo puso en contacto con sus amistades del medio art\u00edstico. Prob\u00f3 suerte como crooner en diversos centros de espect\u00e1culo.<\/div>\n

Grab\u00f3 su primer disco en el sello Tiger con el t\u00edtulo: Saudade que vem (Magalh\u00e3es y C\u00e9lio Ferreira) y Somente uma vez (Lu\u00eds Mergulh\u00e3o e Roberto Moreira). Hacia 1963, fue llevado por Amorim al programa Boleros Dentro da Noite de Radio Mundial, el mismo a\u00f1o Jo\u00e3ozinho del Tr\u00edo Yrakitan, lo present\u00f3 en Ode\u00f3n en donde firm\u00f3 contrato, consigui\u00f3 colocarse en los primeros lugares de las listas de popularidad con el tema Tudo de mim (Evaldo Gouveia y Jair Amorim) logrando el ser conocido en todo Brasil.<\/div>\n

En 1964 grab\u00f3 con gran \u00e9xito: Que queres tu de mim, O trovador, Sentimental demais y Somos iguais (todas de Evaldo Gouveia y Jair Amorim). Destac\u00f3 en Am\u00e9rica Latina, efectuando presentaciones en varios pa\u00edses y grab\u00f3 un Larga Duraci\u00f3n al lado de Lucho Gatica, bajo el t\u00edtulo: El bolero se canta as\u00ed. Conteniendo sus \u00e9xitos versionados al espa\u00f1ol; lleg\u00f3 a vender m\u00e1s de 500 mil copias tan s\u00f3lo en Latinoamericana. Despu\u00e9s de dominar las listas de popularidad locales, ya para 1969, se lanz\u00f3 a la conquista de Estados Unidos, convirti\u00e9ndose en poco tiempo en uno de los cantantes extranjeros m\u00e1s populares en la Uni\u00f3n Americana. Era anfitri\u00f3n de un show para la comunidad latinoamericana, en el club nocturno El Continente, en Nueva York cuando falleci\u00f3 a los 43 a\u00f1os de edad a causa de un derrame cerebral.<\/div>\n

Estuvo casado con la cantante Marta Mendon\u00e7a, con quien procre\u00f3 dos hijos, Deusa Dutra y Altemar Dutra Junior, siendo este \u00faltimo, heredero de la tradici\u00f3n art\u00edstica.<\/div>\n

His career began by performing for Radio Difusora de Colatina, in Esp\u00edrito Santo -locality where his family had moved-, performing melodies by Francisco Alves. Before reaching the age of majority, he emigrated to Rio de Janeiro, carrying a letter of recommendation addressed to the composer Jair Amorim, who put him in contact with friends in his artistic milieu. He tried his luck as a crooner in various entertainment venues.<\/div>\n

He recorded his first album on the Tiger label with the title: Saudade que vem (Magalh\u00e3es and C\u00e9lio Ferreira) and Somente uma vez (Lu\u00eds Mergulh\u00e3o and Roberto Moreira). Around 1963, he was taken by Amorim to the World Radio program Boleros Within da Noite, the same year Jo\u00e3ozinho of the Yrakitan Trio, presented him in Odeon where he signed a contract, he managed to place himself in the first places of the popularity charts with the song Tudo de mim (Evaldo Gouveia and Jair Amorim) becoming known throughout Brazil.<\/div>\n

In 1964 he recorded with great success: Que queres tu de mim, O trovador, Sentimental demais and Somos iguais (all by Evaldo Gouveia and Jair Amorim). He stood out in Latin America, making presentations in several countries and recorded a Long Duration with Lucho Gatica, under the title: The bolero is sung like this. Containing his successes in Spanish versions; It went on to sell more than 500 thousand copies only in Latin America. After dominating the local charts, as early as 1969, he set out to conquer the United States, quickly becoming one of the most popular foreign singers in the American Union. He was hosting a show for the Latin American community at the El Continente nightclub in New York when he passed away at 43 from a stroke.<\/div>\n
