Philippe Lavil is a descendant of French settlers from the West Indies (locally nicknamed b\u00e9k\u00e9s). His father, Max Durand de La Villejegu du Fresnay (1922-1989) and his mother, Marthe Bally (1923-2021), operated a banana plantation in the Fran\u00e7ois commune.<\/div>\n

In 1960 Philippe Lavil was sent to a boarding school in the Dr\u00f4me, where he continued his studies at the Roseraie de Dieulefit school. His English teacher Graeme Allwright introduced him to the song. The young man buys a guitar and decides to become a singer. His parents, little enthusiasm, encouraged him to spend three years at a business school, EDC, which did not prevent him from recording his first single, entitled \u00c0 la califourchon, in 1969.<\/div>\n
