En 1965 escribió con Bricusse otro musical titulado “The roar of the Greasepaint – The smell of the crowd“, que incluía otro clásico “Feelin’ good” que han versioneado desde Nina Simone o Bobby Darin a Elaine Paige o Michel Bubblé.

He was raised by his mother, since his parents separated when he was just a child and educated in Judaism by she. From a very young age, the teachers praised his worth for studying, but at the age of fourteen he abandoned it to start working as a messenger in an insurance company.

Attracted by an advertisement looking for young actors, he went to the audition and when he saw the prices of the school, prohibitive for him, he decided to leave, but he had so impressed the court that they decided to hire him as a gofer, and forgive him the price of tuition, until he got his first role. He played roles in film and on radio, his role as Artful Doger in “Oliver Twist”, directed by David Lean in 1948, being one of his first roles in which he attracted the attention of the public and critics. His transition from adolescent to young heartthrob It was easy and a series of films, many films, contributed to this, reaching the point of filming three, four or five films in a year. The most significant was possibly “Idol on parade”, directed by John Guilling, in which he played a rock singer, who was called up, inspired by the scandal that occurred among the fans of Elvis Presley, his recruitment to the ranks, which would allow him to sing five songs that were successful and marked his future as an actor and singer.

He continues working on television and recording songs, until attracted by musical theater, in collaboration with Leslie Bricusse, he wrote and performed “Stop the world – I want to get off”, being nominated for the Tony Award for best actor. In this musical we find the theme “What kind of fool am I?” with which he won the Grammy in 1963 for the best song of the year. A movie was also made of this musical which was unsuccessful. In 1964, Bricusse & Newley were asked to write the lyrics for the song “Goldfinger”, with music by John Barry, for the James Bond movie series, which a Despite being recorded by Anthony Newley, the version that appeared in the film and took the world by storm was the one recorded by Shirley Bassey.

In 1965 he wrote another musical with Bricusse entitled “The roar of the Greasepaint – The smell of the crowd“, which included another classic “Feelin’ good” that has been covered by everyone from Nina Simone or Bobby Darin to Elaine Paige or Michel Bubblé. In 1967 he was hired to play the musical film “Doctor Doolitle”, written by his partner Leslie Bricusse, directed by Richard Fleisher and starring Rex Harrison, with Samantha Eggar and Newley, which was a resounding failure. His sentimental life was also intense. Married four times to Joan Shandell (1948-55), Ann Lynn (1956-63), Joan Collins (1963-70) and Dareth Rich (1971-89). In 1969 he wrote and directed “Can Heironymus Merkin ever forget Mercy Humppe and find true happiness?”, which he performed with Joan Collins, his then wife, and Milton Berle. The music was his, but the lyrics to the songs were written by Herbert Kretzmer. The film was classified as “X” and although it received the award for best screenplay given by English screenwriters, the film was quite autobiographical and had some similarity to the starting approach of Fellini’s “Eight and a half”, almost 40 years later , in 2006, was voted by the Chicago Tribune as the worst movie ever made.

In 1971, again with Bricusse, he wrote the score for the musical film “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”, based on the short story by Roald Dahl, which over time has become a classic and an adaptation is currently in the works. musical for the theatre, with new songs by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. This was Bricusse and Newley’s last collaboration.

From then on he focused more on performances in Las Vegas, he toured the United States with a revival of “Stop the world – I want to get off”, he appeared on television as the mad hatter, in an adaptation of “Alice in Wonderland” and was preparing a musical based on Shakespeare’s “Richard III”, but cancer prevented him from finishing it.

Discografía

Género Pop

Escuchar Tema

Año de Publicacion

1

What Kind of Fool Am I

1989

2

Pure Imagination

1971

3

The Candy Man

1972

4

Who Can I Turn To

1975

5

I’ve Waited so Long

1959

6

Do You Mind

1960

7

Strawberry Fair

1960

8

Personality

1969

9

Talk to the Animals

1967

10

Ain´t It Funny

1972
