Naci\u00f3 en el n\u00famero 115 de la calle Larga en Chipiona (C\u00e1diz), en el seno de una familia humilde. Su padre, Fernando Mohedano Crespo (1922- 24\/07\/1958; a los 36 a\u00f1os), era zapatero y cantaor de flamenco en sus ratos libres; su madre, Rosario Jurado Bernal (Chipiona, 1926-Madrid, 02\/06\/1978, fallecida a los 62 a\u00f1os de c\u00e1ncer de p\u00e1ncreas), era ama de casa y cantante aficionada de la m\u00fasica espa\u00f1ola.<\/div>\n

La futura estrella tuvo dos hermanos menores, Amador (1954) y Gloria (1955), y siete sobrinos, Fernando, Rosario, Salvador y Amador (hijos de Amador) y Mar\u00eda Eugenia, Gloria y Roc\u00edo (hijas de Gloria). En su hogar aprendi\u00f3 a amar la m\u00fasica; su primera presentaci\u00f3n en p\u00fablico la hizo a los ocho a\u00f1os, en una obra en su Colegio de La Divina Pastora. Tambi\u00e9n aprendi\u00f3 a trabajar duro desde muy ni\u00f1a. Cantaba misas, participaba en festivales de su colegio y tambi\u00e9n, a los quince a\u00f1os, cuando falleci\u00f3 su padre, tuvo que echar una mano a la precaria econom\u00eda familiar. Trabaj\u00f3 de zapatera, recolectora de frutas y a\u00fan ten\u00eda tiempo para presentarse a los concursos de Radio Sevilla.<\/div>\n

A Roc\u00edo la llegaron a llamar La ni\u00f1a de los premios, ya que ganaba todos los premios de las emisoras de radio en los cuales participaba. Como en 1958, su primer premio en Radio Sevilla, en el teatro \u00c1lvarez Quintero, y que consisti\u00f3 en 200 pesetas, una botella de gaseosa y un par de medias, como ella misma confes\u00f3 a una revista del coraz\u00f3n. De la mano de su madre, viaj\u00f3 a Madrid, sin haber cumplido la mayor\u00eda de edad, donde una vieja amiga del pueblo la present\u00f3 a La Ni\u00f1a de los Peines y al maestro Manolo Caracol. Sin embargo, su imparable carrera art\u00edstica no empez\u00f3 hasta su primer encuentro con la cantaora Pastora Imperio.<\/div>\n

Pastora Imperio inmediatamente contrat\u00f3 a Roc\u00edo para el tablao que regentaba, El Duende, uno de los primeros de la \u00e9poca de los tablaos. Siendo una menor, ten\u00eda que vestir ropa que la hiciera aparentar m\u00e1s edad para no llamar la atenci\u00f3n de las autoridades. Su compa\u00f1era, la cantaora y bailaora malague\u00f1a Ca\u00f1eta de M\u00e1laga, que tambi\u00e9n hab\u00eda llegado a Madrid aun siendo joven a buscar fortuna con su arte y fue contratada en El Duende, recuerda en una entrevista como la joven Roc\u00edo cant\u00f3 \u00absus alegr\u00edas, sus tientos y sus cosas de la Piquer\u00bb. Roc\u00edo siempre hab\u00eda dicho que naci\u00f3 en 1944 ya que cuando lleg\u00f3 a Madrid para cantar en 1960 era menor de edad. Hasta los 16 a\u00f1os no pod\u00eda cantar en los tablaos, por este motivo es que falsific\u00f3 su fecha de nacimiento, agreg\u00e1ndole dos a\u00f1os m\u00e1s y diciendo que naci\u00f3 en 1944 en vez de en 1946.<\/div>\n

He was born at 115 Calle Larga in Chipiona (C\u00e1diz), into a humble family. His father, Fernando Mohedano Crespo (1922- 07\/24\/1958; at the age of 36), was a shoemaker and flamenco singer in his spare time; his mother, Rosario Jurado Bernal (Chipiona, 1926-Madrid, 06\/02\/1978, died at the age of 62 from pancreatic cancer), was a housewife and an amateur singer of Spanish music.<\/div>\n

The future star had two younger brothers, Amador (1954) and Gloria (1955), and seven nephews, Fernando, Rosario, Salvador and Amador (Amador’s sons) and Mar\u00eda Eugenia, Gloria and Roc\u00edo (Gloria’s daughters). At home he learned to love music; he made his first public presentation at the age of eight, in a play at his Colegio de La Divina Pastora. She also learned to work hard from a very young age. He sang masses, participated in festivals at his school and also, at the age of fifteen, when his father died, he had to lend a hand to the precarious family finances. She worked as a shoemaker, a fruit picker and still had time to appear in Radio Sevilla contests.<\/div>\n

They came to call Roc\u00edo La Ni\u00f1a de los Premios, since she won all the awards from the radio stations in which she participated. As in 1958, her first prize on Radio Sevilla, at the \u00c1lvarez Quintero theater, and which consisted of 200 pesetas, a bottle of soda and a pair of socks, as she herself confessed to a magazine of the heart. Hand in hand with her mother, she traveled to Madrid, without having reached the age of majority, where an old friend from the town introduced her to La Ni\u00f1a de los Peines and the teacher Manolo Caracol. However, his unstoppable artistic career did not begin until his first meeting with the cantaora Pastora Imperio.<\/div>\n

Pastora Imperio immediately hired Roc\u00edo for the tablao she ran, El Duende, one of the first from the tablaos era. Being a minor, she had to wear clothes that made her appear older so as not to attract the attention of the authorities. His partner, the Malaga cantaora and bailaora Ca\u00f1eta de M\u00e1laga, who had also come to Madrid even though she was young to seek her fortune with her art and was hired at El Duende, recalls in an interview how the young Roc\u00edo sang \u00abher alegr\u00edas, sus tientos and his things from the Piquer. Roc\u00edo had always said that she was born in 1944 since when she came to Madrid to sing in 1960 she was a minor. Until he was 16 he could not sing in tablaos, for this reason he falsified his date of birth, adding two more years and saying that he was born in 1944 instead of 1946.<\/div>\n
