Naci\u00f3 en el coraz\u00f3n de Guayaquil y mis padres, Julio Fortunado y Susana, estaban involucrados en el arte. \u00c9l tocaba el viol\u00edn y ella era una cantante amateur\u201d, anota Saavedra.<\/div>\n

Agrega que a finales de los a\u00f1os 20 radio Cenit ten\u00eda un programa dirigido a ni\u00f1os de 4 a\u00f1os en adelante. A ella le gustaba cantar los temas que escuchaba. Su madre not\u00f3 su afici\u00f3n y la llev\u00f3 a participar.<\/div>\n

El primer tema que cant\u00f3 fue el bolero Estrellita m\u00eda y gust\u00f3 tanto que la invitaron a volver la semana siguiente. As\u00ed lo hizo y comparti\u00f3 con los oyentes el tango Ma\u00f1ana zarpa un barco. \u201cEl programa se llamaba \u2018La compa\u00f1era Nelly\u2019, y como gust\u00e9 me fui quedando\u201d, refiere.<\/div>\n

A\u00f1ade que cuando ten\u00eda 12 a\u00f1os su madre falleci\u00f3 y fue su padre quien la anim\u00f3 a continuar en el canto. Fue a esa edad que se convirti\u00f3 en artista profesional porque radio C\u00f3ndor le pagaba 110 sucres por cantar los mi\u00e9rcoles, jueves y domingos.<\/div>\n

Cursaba el sexto grado y compart\u00eda el quehacer musical con Blanca Palomeque, con quien luego form\u00f3 el d\u00fao Las Porte\u00f1itas, del cual fue siempre la primera voz. \u201cDuramos varios a\u00f1os y grabamos numerosos discos para el sello C\u00f3ndor\u201d. Estos, agrega, eran de carb\u00f3n \u201cy se vendieron much\u00edsimo\u201d.<\/div>\n

Saavedra dice haber perdido la cuenta de las producciones que grab\u00f3 en las que intervino, pero comenta que tras la disoluci\u00f3n de Las Porte\u00f1itas form\u00f3 con M\u00e1xima Mej\u00eda el dueto Las Ecuatorianas. \u201cTambi\u00e9n cant\u00e9 con Luisa Rojas Mendoza y grab\u00e9 con Pepe S\u00e1nchez, Gonzalo Moncayo, Carlos Regalado, Pepe y Julio Jaramillo\u201d.<\/div>\n

Los temas que interpretaba eran in\u00e9ditos \u201cy varios de ellos escrito por m\u00ed\u201d. En su reportorio hay pasillos, albazos, sanjuanitos y tropical, aunque es el primero de los g\u00e9neros mencionados el que m\u00e1s disfruta.<\/div>\n

\u201cTengo en mi mente el momento en que hice estas grabaciones, pero dif\u00edcilmente recuerdo sus t\u00edtulos\u201d, anota Saavedra, que aclara tener buena memoria. Tanto, que recuerda como ayer las circunstancias en que se cre\u00f3 el porro El ladr\u00f3n, popularizado en Ecuador, Colombia, Per\u00fa, Chile, Argentina y Bolivia. \u201cFue entre 1955 y 1956, y en M\u00e9xico estuvo cuatro semanas en el Hit Parade\u201d.<\/div>\n

La letra surgi\u00f3 del aut\u00e9ntico robo de una cadena de oro del cual fue v\u00edctima cuando con su padre caminaba por Sucre y Seis de Marzo hasta radio Cristal. \u201cSal\u00ed corriendo detr\u00e1s del pillo y se lo coment\u00e9 a Caballito Garc\u00e9s, que estaba en la emisora. \u00c9l me anim\u00f3 a plasmar mi experiencia en una canci\u00f3n, as\u00ed lo hicimos y naci\u00f3 El ladr\u00f3n\u201d.<\/div>\n

Saavedra tambi\u00e9n prest\u00f3 su voz para la novela Camay, que transmit\u00eda radio Am\u00e9rica. Las an\u00e9cdotas abundan en su vida, anota la cantante, quien est\u00e1 de luto por la muerte de Francisco, un hermano menor al que cri\u00f3 como hijo y que d\u00edas atr\u00e1s muri\u00f3 en EE.UU., donde viv\u00eda.<\/div>\n

I was born in the heart of Guayaquil and my parents, Julio Fortunado and Susana, were involved in art. He played the violin and she was an amateur singer, \u201dsays Saavedra.<\/div>\n

He adds that at the end of the 1920s, Radio Cenit had a program aimed at children 4 years of age and older. She liked to sing the songs she listened to. Her mother noticed her hobby and took her to participate.<\/div>\n

The first song she sang was the bolero Estrellita m\u00eda and she liked it so much that she was invited to come back the following week. He did so and shared with the listeners the tango Tomorrow a ship sets sail. “The program was called\u2018 La compa\u00f1era Nelly \u2019, and as I liked it, I was staying,” he says.<\/div>\n

She adds that when she was 12 her mother passed away and it was her father who encouraged her to continue singing. It was at that age that he became a professional artist because Radio C\u00f3ndor paid him 110 sucres to sing on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.<\/div>\n

He was in sixth grade and shared the musical work with Blanca Palomeque, with whom he later formed the duo Las Porte\u00f1itas, of which he was always the first voice. “We lasted several years and recorded numerous albums for the C\u00f3ndor label.” These, he adds, were made of coal “and they were sold a lot.”<\/div>\n

Saavedra claims to have lost count of the productions he recorded in which he participated, but says that after the dissolution of Las Porte\u00f1itas he formed the duet Las Ecuatorianas with M\u00e1xima Mej\u00eda. “I also sang with Luisa Rojas Mendoza and recorded with Pepe S\u00e1nchez, Gonzalo Moncayo, Carlos Regalado, Pepe and Julio Jaramillo.”<\/div>\n

The songs he performed were unpublished “and several of them written by me.” In his report there are corridors, albazos, sanjuanitos and tropical, although it is the first of the genres mentioned that he enjoys the most.<\/div>\n

“I have in my mind the moment when I made these recordings, but I hardly remember their titles,” says Saavedra, who makes it clear that he has a good memory. So much so, that he remembers, as yesterday, the circumstances in which the El thief joint was created, popularized in Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Argentina and Bolivia. “It was between 1955 and 1956, and in Mexico he spent four weeks in the Hit Parade.”<\/div>\n

The lyrics arose from the authentic theft of a gold chain of which he was a victim when with his father he walked through Sucre and Seis de Marzo to Radio Cristal. \u201cI ran after the rogue and told Caballito Garc\u00e9s, who was on the station. He encouraged me to translate my experience into a song, so we did and The Thief was born \u201d.<\/div>\n

Saavedra also lent his voice for the novel Camay, which was broadcast by radio Am\u00e9rica. Anecdotes abound in his life, notes the singer, who is mourning the death of Francisco, a younger brother whom he raised as a son and who died days ago in the United States, where he lived.<\/div>\n
