Roy Castle OBE (31 de agosto de 1932 \u2013 2 de septiembre de 1994) fue un bailar\u00edn, trompetista de jazz, cantante, humorista, actor y presentador televisivo de nacionalidad brit\u00e1nica.<\/p>\n

De padre ferroviario, Castle naci\u00f3 en Scholes, Inglaterra, \u200b y estudi\u00f3 en la Honley High School. Era bailar\u00edn de claqu\u00e9 desde ni\u00f1o y, tras dejar la Grammar School de Holme Valley, comenz\u00f3 su carrera como artista en un grupo teatral de aficionados. En la d\u00e9cada de 1950 viv\u00eda en Cleveleys, cerca de Blackpool, y actuaba all\u00ed en el Queen’s Theatre, haci\u00e9ndose profesional en 1953 como humorista acompa\u00f1ante de Jimmy Clitheroe y Jimmy James. En 1958 ya actu\u00f3 en el Royal Variety Show.<\/p>\n

Entre 1958 y 1969 Castle grab\u00f3 numerosos sencillos y tres LP. De los \u00faltimos, el m\u00e1s destacado fue Songs For A Rainy Day, grabado en 1966 para Columbia Records y regrabado en formato CD por EMI Gold con el t\u00edtulo de Isn’t This A Lovely Day. En el disco se recogen 12 canciones cuyo tema central es la lluvia. Es de destacar la colaboraci\u00f3n en el disco de algunos de los principales m\u00fasicos brit\u00e1nicos de Jazz del momento, como es el caso de Gordon Beck (piano), Jeff Clyne (bajo), Leon Calvert (fiscorno), Ike Isaacs (guitarra), Ray Swinfield (flauta) y Al Newman (saxo). El LP tiene arreglos de jazz de Victor Graham y cubre una variedad de estilos tales como \u00e9xitos de las grandes bandas (“Pennies from Heaven”, “Stormy Weather”), baladas (“February Brings The Rain”, “Here’s That Rainy Day”, “Soon It’s Gonna Rain”), y bossa nova (“Everytime It Rains”, “The Gentle Rain”).<\/p>\n

A Castle le diagnosticaron un c\u00e1ncer de pulm\u00f3n en enero de 1992, siendo tratado con quimioterapia y radioterapia. Castle, que no era fumador, culpaba de su enfermedad a sus a\u00f1os tocando la trompeta en clubes llenos de humo. El 26 de noviembre de 1993 Castle anunci\u00f3 que su enfermedad se hab\u00eda reagudizado. Varios meses despu\u00e9s llev\u00f3 a cabo el notorio Tour of Hope a fin de recoger fondos para construir el edificio de la Fundaci\u00f3n Roy Castle contra el c\u00e1ncer de pulm\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

Roy Castle falleci\u00f3 el 2 de septiembre de 1994,7\u200b d\u00edas despu\u00e9s de cumplir los 62 a\u00f1os. Sus restos fueron incinerados.<\/p>\n

Roy Castle OBE (31 August 1932 \u2013 2 September 1994) was a British dancer, jazz trumpeter, singer, comedian, actor and television presenter.<\/p>\n

Born to a railway worker, Castle was born in Scholes, England, and studied at Honley High School. He had been a tap dancer as a child and, after leaving Holme Valley Grammar School, began his career as a performer in an amateur theater group. In the 1950s he lived in Cleveleys, near Blackpool, and performed there at the Queen’s Theatre, turning professional in 1953 as a sideman for Jimmy Clitheroe and Jimmy James. In 1958 he already acted in the Royal Variety Show.<\/p>\n

Between 1958 and 1969 Castle recorded numerous singles and three LPs. Of the latter, the most prominent was Songs For A Rainy Day, recorded in 1966 for Columbia Records and re-recorded on CD by EMI Gold under the title Isn’t This A Lovely Day. The album includes 12 songs whose central theme is rain. Noteworthy is the collaboration on the album with some of the leading British Jazz musicians of the moment, such as Gordon Beck (piano), Jeff Clyne (bass), Leon Calvert (flugelhorn), Ike Isaacs (guitar), Ray Swinfield (flute) and Al Newman (sax). The LP has jazz arrangements by Victor Graham and covers a variety of styles such as big band hits (“Pennies from Heaven”, “Stormy Weather”), ballads (“February Brings The Rain”, “Here’s That Rainy Day” , “Soon It’s Gonna Rain”), and bossa nova (“Everytime It Rains”, “The Gentle Rain”).<\/p>\n

Castle was diagnosed with lung cancer in January 1992 and was treated with chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Castle, who was not a smoker, blamed his illness on his years playing the trumpet in smoky clubs. On November 26, 1993, Castle announced that his illness had flared up. Several months later he undertook the notorious Tour of Hope to raise funds to build the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation building.<\/p>\n

Roy Castle passed away on September 2, 1994,7 two days after his 62nd birthday. His remains were cremated.<\/p>\n
