He was awarded the Latin Grammy Awards in 2013 for the album El Caballo de Oro, this becoming the second singer-songwriter of llanera music to obtain it.

They are his parents, Nicasio Armas Figueroa and Modesta Enguaima Hernández, both of peasant origin and agricultural workers. It is there where, at the age of 11, he begins by escaping from his home to share with local musicians in parrandas and peasant dances. Sing and play the baskets. At the age of 12, he componed his first song “My First Love”. After turning 15, he made his debut in a Sonda program on Radio Zaraza, hosted by Pompeyo Higuera “Caminitos de Zaraza”. Later, he would be part of the bagpipe group “Los Bravos de la Loma”, for which he would write several Christmas carols and Christmas gifts, under the direction of maestro José Antonio Blanca de los Copleros del Unare. At the age of 16, he participated in a counterpoint festival held at the El Faro club and won a trophy and money from the audience.

It is at the age of 17 when he travels to the city of Caracas on a bus on the La Pascua line. Here he meets a completely different world and distant from its slum and countrymen. He has to burn many stages in beer halls, discos and the few places where folk music was performed.

His first godfather (if that is what he can be called) was the maestro Don José Romero Bello, a highly respected singer-songwriter and one of the interpreters of the legendary work of the poet Alberto Arvelo Torrealba, entitled “Florentino y el Diablo”, together with the also hurried Carrao of Palmarito.

Baptized with the pseudonym “El Cardenal Sabanero” he travels by the hand of Romero Bello to San Fernando de Apure and participates in the festival “Cantaclaro de Oro”, a version of the Florentino de Oro, in 1973. Here he ranks second, among 18 participants from all over the plain. In 1975 he returned to the festival and won. He does the same in Valencia, with the “Cucarachero de Oro”. At the San Carlos de Austria, he won the Miranda de Oro in Los Teques as a composer, and many more awards, as a counterpoint and as a solo singer. Between 1975 and 1976, he recorded two single discs; the first with “Mi primer Amor y Cariño fingido” and the second with “Touring Venezuela and the Revolutionary.”

In 1977, he recorded his first full-length with the support of Rafael Martínez Arteaga “El Cazador Novato”, who by then was stuck in Venezuela and Colombia with various folk poems. Another who sounded a lot was Gualberto Ibarreto, with his “María Antonia” and other traditional themes.

“I Also Want to Sing”, as Reynaldo’s first album was titled, did not have a very good reception on the radio, since by then Creole music only sounded on certain early morning programs and on television it was not broadcast.

However, in the interior of the country many events were held that served as the stage for the criollo seedbed of that time. In 1978, the song “They don’t let me love you” began to be heard on the radio, with lyrics by Víctor Brizuela and sung by Reyna Lucero, with whom months before he had shared in various breweries. Cristóbal Jiménez also began to be heard dressed as a white heron, lyrics by Pedro Felipe Sosa Caro.

It is in mid-1978 when Reynaldo’s long-playing “Inspiration of the Poet” begins to sound throughout the country, a more romantic Creole music without leaving behind the landscape and the song of life. Penetrate the most important cities and convince the most controversial audience. People of different ages and sex immediately identify with this artist who becomes a Messiah for llanera music.

From then on, an unparalleled parade of hits begins. Awards, recognitions and decorations come and go. Awards such as the Guaicaipuro de Oro, Meridiano, Ronda, Mara, Cacique, Tiuna, Venus de la Prensa, Águilas in different deliveries, are part of the endless gallery of Reynaldo Armas.

He has written more than three hundred songs and recorded 26 full-length albums – all with songs composed by him, except for three songs from the first album, which belong to the Rookie Hunter. Now, although he promotes his album “The Flight”, he is already preparing his production number 27, which will be released in 2005. He ful fills a busy schedule of personal presentations and maintains that as long as he has breath he will sing and compose for his people, that after Good it’s the reason to be.
