Hered\u00f3 su talento art\u00edstico de su abuelo materno y de su t\u00edo Timole\u00f3n Jaramillo, que le ense\u00f1aron a tocar la guitarra y a cantar m\u00fasica aut\u00f3ctona. Mientras cursaba la secundaria, Carlota encontr\u00f3 motivaci\u00f3n en sus profesoras, especialmente en Eleonora Neumann, que le ayud\u00f3 para que realizara una prueba de voz para el maestro Sixto Mar\u00eda Dur\u00e1n. \u00c9ste se convirti\u00f3 luego en su profesor particular. Carlota particip\u00f3 en 1922 en un concurso de canto para aficionados en el teatro Ed\u00e9n de Quito, cantando a d\u00fao con su hermana In\u00e9s, y ambas ganaron el premio \u00fanico que consist\u00eda en una guitarra y una guindola. A poco de graduarse, Carlota e In\u00e9s fueron convocadas por el profesor Rafael Ramos Albuja, m\u00fasico y ex director de orquesta de la compa\u00f1\u00eda espa\u00f1ola de Esperanza Iris, para fundar la Compa\u00f1\u00eda de Revistas y Variedades Ramos Albuja, pero las j\u00f3venes estaban prohibidas por su madre para actuar y cantar. Adicionalmente, el p\u00fablico ecuatoriano estaba acostumbrado a las \u00f3peras y operetas europeas, y se resist\u00eda a lo aut\u00f3ctono.<\/div>\n

Sin embargo, la primera presentaci\u00f3n de la Compa\u00f1\u00eda fue un \u00e9xito y las hermanas Jaramillo fueron muy aplaudidas. En 1926 se form\u00f3 otra compa\u00f1\u00eda de Comedias y Variedades y Carlota fue su primera actriz. Carlota e In\u00e9s ten\u00edan amistad con Jorge Araujo Chiriboga, actor, cantante, compositor y representante art\u00edstico, con quien Carlota se cas\u00f3 pese a la oposici\u00f3n de su familia. En 1935 la cantante inici\u00f3 su carrera como solista en los programas radiales de HCJB, interpretando no solo pasillos sino pasodobles y tangos.<\/div>\n

Adem\u00e1s se presentaba tres veces por semana en Radio Quito. En 1938 grab\u00f3 su primer disco sencillo, Honda pena, que vendi\u00f3 mil copias en un mes. Fue la primera vez que un artista nacional grababa en el pa\u00eds. El p\u00fablico y los medios de comunicaci\u00f3n la bautizaron como \u201creina del pasillo\u201d y tambi\u00e9n como \u201calondra quite\u00f1a\u201d. Con el sello Emporio Musical grab\u00f3 a d\u00fao con Luis Alberto Valencia y varios nuevos discos se sucedieron con \u00e9xito. Sin embargo, la cantante no vivi\u00f3 de su arte sino como Inspectora General del Colegio Bol\u00edvar y luego como Ayudante en el Ministerio de Econom\u00eda en la \u00e9poca de Velasco Ibarra. Se jubil\u00f3 a los 54 a\u00f1os con una pensi\u00f3n m\u00f3dica.<\/div>\n

En 1970, cuando se produjo la muerte de su esposo Jorge Araujo, la cantante puso fin a su carrera musical. Falleci\u00f3 en 1987 a los 83 a\u00f1os de edad.<\/div>\n

He inherited the artistic talent of his maternal grandfather and his uncle Timole\u00f3n Jaramillo, who taught him to play the guitar and sing native music. While in high school, Carlota found motivation in her teachers, especially in Eleonora Neumann, who helped her to perform a voice test for teacher Sixto Mar\u00eda Dur\u00e1n. He later became her private teacher. In 1922, Carlota participated in a singing competition for amateurs at the Ed\u00e9n theater in Quito, singing in a duet with her sister In\u00e9s hers, and both won the single prize that consisted of a guitar and a guindola. Shortly after graduating, Carlota and In\u00e9s were summoned by Professor Rafael Ramos Albuja, musician and former conductor of the Spanish Esperanza Iris company, to found the Ramos Albuja Magazines and Varieties Company, but the young women were forbidden by their mother to act and sing.<\/div>\n

Additionally, the Ecuadorian public was accustomed to European operas and operettas, and resisted the indigenous. However, the first presentation of the Company was a success and the Jaramillo sisters were highly applauded. In 1926 another Comedies and Varieties company was formed and Carlota was its first actress. Carlota and In\u00e9s were friends with Jorge Araujo Chiriboga, actor, singer, composer and artistic representative, with whom Carlota married despite opposition from her family. In 1935 the singer began her career as a soloist in the HCJB radio programs, interpreting not only corridors but pasodobles and tangos.<\/div>\n

She also appeared three times a week on Radio Quito. In 1938 she recorded her first single, Honda pena, which sold a thousand copies in a month. It was the first time that a national artist recorded in the country. The public and the media baptized her as “queen of the hall” and also as “Quito lark”.<\/div>\n

With the Emporio Musical label she recorded as a duet with Luis Alberto Valencia and several new albums followed with success. However, the singer did not live on her art but as Inspector General of the Bol\u00edvar College and later as an Assistant in the Ministry of Economy in the time of Velasco Ibarra. She retired at 54 with a modest pension. In 1970, when her husband Jorge Araujo died, the singer put an end to her musical career. She passed away in 1987 at the age of 83.<\/div>\n
