Rafael V\u00e1squez, fue compositor, music\u00f3logo, director y pianista guatemalteco, fue alumno de piano y composici\u00f3n con Luis Felipe Arias en el Conservatorio Nacional de Guatemala, en donde ingres\u00f3 en 1898. Sus profesores y compa\u00f1eros de estudios se mostraron asombrados por el talento y la extraordinaria memoria auditiva del joven. Ya en 1906 se presentaba como virtuoso pianista, e inclu\u00eda en sus programas sus propios valses de concierto y otras composiciones.<\/div>\n

De 1914 a 1916 estudi\u00f3 en los Estados Unidos, donde profundiz\u00f3 sus conocimientos de teor\u00eda y musicolog\u00eda. A su regreso a Guatemala fue director de orquesta, dirigiendo en el Teatro Variedades la compa\u00f1\u00eda de \u00f3pera de In\u00e9s Beruti. En 1920 se le encarg\u00f3 la direcci\u00f3n de la Banda Militar y de la Banda de la Polic\u00eda en Quetzaltenango, puesto que hab\u00eda tenido a\u00f1os antes. Concluida esa etapa, abri\u00f3 en la Ciudad de Guatemala una editorial en la que publicaba m\u00fasica, tanto manuscrita como impresa. En algunos de sus m\u00e9todos did\u00e1cticos para piano incluy\u00f3 piezas de sus contempor\u00e1neos como Jos\u00e9 Casta\u00f1eda, Georgette Contoux de Castillo y Salvador Ley.<\/div>\n

En el campo de la promoci\u00f3n cultural fue de mucha influencia en la Ciudad de Guatemala, cuando fund\u00f3 la Uni\u00f3n Musical que presidi\u00f3 por varios a\u00f1os. La orquesta de esa uni\u00f3n sobresali\u00f3 como la mejor agrupaci\u00f3n del pa\u00eds, participando en homenajes a Jes\u00fas Castillo en 1924, en ocasi\u00f3n del estreno de la \u00f3pera Quich\u00e9 Vinak, y liderando los festejos musicales del centenario de Beethoven en 1927.<\/div>\n

Rafael V\u00e1squez, was a Guatemalan composer, musicologist, conductor and pianist, he was a piano and composition student with Luis Felipe Arias at the National Conservatory of Guatemala, where he entered in 1898. His teachers and fellow students are amazed by the talent and the extraordinary auditory memory of the young man. As early as 1906 he presented himself as a virtuoso pianist, and included his own concert waltzes and other compositions in his programs. From 1914 to 1916 he studied in the United States, where he deepened his knowledge of theory and musicology.<\/div>\n

On his return to Guatemala he was an orchestra conductor, directing the In\u00e9s Beruti opera company at the Variedades Theater. In 1920 he was commissioned to direct the Military Band and the Police Band in Quetzaltenango, since he had had years before. After that stage, he opened a publishing house in Guatemala City in which he published music, both handwritten and printed. In some of his teaching methods for piano he included pieces by his contemporaries such as Jos\u00e9 Casta\u00f1eda, Georgette Contoux de Castillo and Salvador Ley.<\/div>\n

In the field of cultural promotion, he was very influential in Guatemala City, when he founded the Musical Union, which he presided over for several years. The orchestra of that union stood out as the best group in the country, participating in tributes to Jes\u00fas Castillo in 1924, on the occasion of the premiere of the Quich\u00e9 Vinak opera, and leading the musical celebrations of Beethoven’s centenary in 1927.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
