John Ethrington, luego conocido como John Miles, es un cantautor, guitarrista y tecladista ingl\u00e9s hab\u00eda nacido en Jarrow, Inglaterra, en abril de 1949. Durante su juventud, Miles hab\u00eda sido integrante de The Influence, un grupo adolescente de su ciudad natal, del cual tambi\u00e9n eran miembros Paul Thompson, posteriormente baterista de Roxy Music, y Vic Malcolm, luego guitarrista de Geordie. M\u00e1s tarde, Miles formar\u00eda su propia banda, The John Miles Set, antes de comenzar su carrera solista. Luego de varios a\u00f1os, en apariencia infructuosos, Miles consigue llamar la atenci\u00f3n de un par de sellos discogr\u00e1ficos con el demo de \u201cHigh Fly\u201d, una canci\u00f3n en sinton\u00eda con los sonidos del glam rock, aunque con una melod\u00eda muy original, con mucho gancho. \u201cHigh Fly\u201d hab\u00eda sido compuesta por Miles junto a Bob Marshall, el bajista de su banda. Ambos formaban un dueto compositivo, en donde John se encargaba de la m\u00fasica y Bob de las letras.<\/div>\n

Antes de firmar contrato con Decca, John y su banda ya hab\u00edan tenido ofrecimientos contractuales de varios sellos discogr\u00e1ficos, en especial EMI, pero Miles sinti\u00f3 que dentro de EMI el \u00e1lbum no iba a tener la promoci\u00f3n que le promet\u00eda Decca. Los ejecutivos de esta compa\u00f1\u00eda hab\u00edan quedado muy entusiasmados con el demo de “High Fly”, porque ve\u00edan en Miles un gran potencial como artista popular, y en su figura la posibilidad de que el sello volviese a tener una impronta fuerte en el rock, algo que Decca no consegu\u00eda desde la \u00e9poca en que los Stones grababan en el sello, en los \u00b460. Luego de la salida del grupo de Jagger y Richards, Decca se hab\u00eda tenido que conformar, durante la mayor parte de los \u00b470, de tener \u00e9xito solo con artistas etiquetados dentro del llamado “easy listening”, como el m\u00edtico Tom Jones.<\/div>\n

Cuando Miles firm\u00f3 contrato con Decca, los directivos de la compa\u00f1\u00eda le presentaron a Alan Parsons, en el verano boreal de 1975. Parsons y Miles r\u00e1pidamente congeniaron y se pusieron a grabar \u201cHigh Fly\u201d, que ser\u00eda editado como single en el Reino Unido en septiembre del \u201975, alcanzando el puesto 17 en los rankings de singles brit\u00e1nicos y el 68 en la Billboard en los Estados Unidos. Debido al \u00e9xito de esta canci\u00f3n, se comenz\u00f3 a grabar el primer larga duraci\u00f3n de Miles, durante noviembre y diciembre de 1975, en los m\u00edticos estudios de Abbey Road. Un lugar en donde Parsons se sent\u00eda muy c\u00f3modo.<\/div>\n

Rebel ser\u00eda editado en marzo del \u201976. La cr\u00edtica especializada recibi\u00f3 al disco con alborozo. Por ejemplo, los titulares de Melody Maker dec\u00edan \u201cJohn Miles: Una nueva Estrella ha nacido\u201d, dando cuenta de su \u201csensacional debut\u201d. Justamente, el \u00e1lbum entero reflejaba \u2013tanto en los t\u00edtulos de las canciones, as\u00ed como en varias de sus letras- las observaciones de John Miles acerca de la vida.<\/div>\n

Sin dudas, Rebel era el \u00e9xito que Decca hab\u00eda ansiado. Sin embargo, m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de la impecable producci\u00f3n de Alan Parsons, hay que destacar que nada de esto hubiese sido posible si John Miles no hubiese estado en uno de sus mejores momentos art\u00edsticos. Gracias a su amplio rango vocal, se encarg\u00f3 de todas las voces solistas, adem\u00e1s de tocar teclados, guitarra el\u00e9ctrica y sintetizadores. Durante toda la grabaci\u00f3n, acompa\u00f1aron a Miles, su compinche compositivo Bob Marshall, en bajo; y Barry Black, en bater\u00eda y percusiones. Justamente, tanto Marshall como Black ser\u00edan los m\u00fasicos de la banda de John Miles durante muchos a\u00f1os, participando tambi\u00e9n de los siguientes \u00e1lbumes de este artista. Otro de los protagonistas principales de este \u00e1lbum fue Andrew Powell, quien, a partir de las indicaciones de Parsons y Miles, se encarg\u00f3 de los arreglos orquestales que tanta importancia cobrar\u00edan en varios de los temas del disco.<\/div>\n

John Ethrington, later known as John Miles, is an English singer-songwriter, guitarist and keyboardist born in Jarrow, England, in April 1949. During his youth, Miles had been a member of The Influence, a teenage group from his hometown, of the which were also members Paul Thompson, later drummer for Roxy Music, and Vic Malcolm, later guitarist for Geordie. Later, Miles would form his own band, The John Miles Set, before beginning his solo career. After several years, apparently unsuccessful, Miles manages to attract the attention of a couple of record labels with the demo of \u201cHigh Fly\u201d, a song in tune with the sounds of glam rock, although with a very original melody, with a lot of hook. “High Fly” had been composed by Miles with Bob Marshall, the bassist of his band. Both formed a compositional duet, where John was in charge of the music and Bob of the lyrics.<\/div>\n

Before signing with Decca, John and his contract had already had contractual offers from several record labels, especially EMI, but Miles felt that within EMI the album was not going to have the promotion that Decca promised. The executives of this company are still very enthusiastic about the demo of “High Fly”, because they saw in Miles great potential as a popular artist, and in his figure the possibility that the label would once again have a strong imprint on rock, something that Decca hadn’t been around since the time the Stones were recording on the label in the 1960s. After the departure of the group of Jagger and Richards, Decca had had to conform, during most of the ’70s, to be successful only with artists labeled within the so-called “easy listening”, such as the mythical Tom Jones.<\/div>\n

When Miles signed with Decca, the company directors introduced him to Alan Parsons, in the summer of 1975. Parsons and Miles quickly hit it off and began recording “High Fly”, which would be released as a single in the UK on September ’75, reaching 17th place on the British Singles charts and 68th on the Billboard in the United States. Due to the success of this song, he began to record the first full length of Miles, during November and December 1975, in the mythical Abbey Road studios. A place where Parsons felt very comfortable.<\/div>\n

Rebel would be released in March ’76. The specialized critics received the album with joy.
