Jorge Du\u00edlio Lima Meneses, m\u00e1s conocido como Jorge Ben Jor, es un guitarrista, percusionista, cantante y compositor popular brasile\u00f1o, naci\u00f3 en R\u00edo de Janeiro, 22 de marzo de 1942.<\/div>\n

Tuvo su primer pandeiro a los trece a\u00f1os de edad y, dos a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s, ya cantaba en el coro de una iglesia, pero quer\u00eda ser jugador de f\u00fatbol, llegando a integrar el equipo infanto-juvenil del Clube de Regatas do Flamengo.<\/div>\n

Tambi\u00e9n participaba como tocador de pandeiro en blocos de carnaval. A los dieciocho, su madre le regal\u00f3 una guitarra y comenz\u00f3 a hacer presentaciones en fiestas y boates.<\/div>\n

Y fue en una de esas boates que su carrera comenz\u00f3: en 1963, se subi\u00f3 al palco y cant\u00f3 “M\u00e1s que Nada” para una peque\u00f1a platea, en la que se encontraba un ejecutivo de la discogr\u00e1fica Philips. Una semana despu\u00e9s, era lanzado el primer compacto de Jorge Ben. Su ritmo h\u00edbrido le trajo algunos problemas al inicio, cuando la m\u00fasica brasile\u00f1a estaba dividida entre la Jovem Guarda y el samba tradicional, de letras engajadas. Al pasar a tener inter\u00e9s por la m\u00fasica, el artista vivi\u00f3 una \u00e9poca en la cual la bossa nova gozaba de un gran \u00e9xito en el mundo. Sus primeras presentaciones p\u00fablicas fueron en fiestas de amigos, regadas por bossa nova y rock. Como la mayor\u00eda de los m\u00fasicos de entonces, fue inicialmente influenciado por Jo\u00e3o Gilberto, pero ya desde el inicio fue bastante innovador. La canci\u00f3n mencionada previamente, M\u00e1s que Nada, fue su primer gran \u00e9xito en Brasil, y tambi\u00e9n uno de los temas musicales en lengua portuguesa m\u00e1s populares en los Estados Unidos hasta los d\u00edas de hoy. La canci\u00f3n lleg\u00f3 a tal punto, que fue interpretada por jazzistas de renombre, tales como Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzie Gillespie o Al Jarreau.<\/div>\n

En los 70 lanz\u00f3 sus discos m\u00e1s esot\u00e9ricos y experimentales, principalmente los \u00e1lbumes “A T\u00e1bua de Esmeraldas” en el 72, “Solta o Pav\u00e3o” del 75 y “Africa Brasil” en el 76, que no tuvieron popularidad y fueron apenas contemplados por una minor\u00eda en su \u00e9poca, pero que hoy son considerados cl\u00e1sicos. En 1989, Jorge Ben cambi\u00f3 de discogr\u00e1fica y tambi\u00e9n de nombre art\u00edstico, que fue modificado a Jorge Benjor (o Jorge Ben Jor). En la \u00e9poca, dijeron que fue el motivo fue la numerolog\u00eda, (y seg\u00fan sus propias palabras, \u201capenas uma sugest\u00e3o de marketing\u201d) pero, en verdad, el cambio se debi\u00f3 a problemas con derechos de autor. A partir de este per\u00edodo, su m\u00fasica se inclin\u00f3 m\u00e1s hacia el pop, pero mantuvo el swing.<\/div>\n

Tiene el h\u00e1bito de dormir entre las siete de la ma\u00f1ana y las cuatro de la tarde, prefiriendo componer de noche, cuando se siente m\u00e1s inspirado. Acostumbra presentarse siempre con ropa blanca, por una mera cuesti\u00f3n de gusto, y no de superstici\u00f3n. Jorge Ben Jor es sin dudas un importante personaje de la historia de la m\u00fasica brasile\u00f1a, considerado el padre del samba-rock. Pero aun as\u00ed, intenta mantener su simplicidad. Se define como un \u201cpoeta urbano y suburbano\u201d.<\/div>\n

Jorge Du\u00edlio Lima Meneses, better known as Jorge Ben Jor, is a popular Brazilian guitarist, percussionist, singer and composer, born in Rio de Janeiro, March 22, 1942.<\/div>\n

His characteristic musical style includes samba, funk, rock, pop, maracatu, bossa nova, rap and samba-rock with lyrics that combine humor and satire. He often includes esoteric themes in his songs.<\/div>\n

He had his first pandeiro at the age of thirteen and, two years later, he was already singing in a church choir, but he wanted to be a soccer player, becoming a member of the children’s and youth team of the Clube de Regatas do Flamengo. He also participated as a pandeiro player in carnival blocks. At eighteen, his mother gave him a guitar and he began to perform at parties and nightclubs.<\/div>\n
And it was in one of those boats that his career began: in 1963, he got on the stage and sang “M\u00e1s que Nada” for a small audience, in which an executive of the Philips record company was. A week later, Jorge Ben’s first compact was released. His hybrid rhythm brought him some problems at the beginning, when Brazilian music was divided between Jovem Guarda and traditional samba, with catchy lyrics. By becoming interested in music, the artist lived through a time in which bossa nova enjoyed great success in the world. His first public presentations were at friends’ parties, watered by bossa nova and rock. Like most musicians of that time, he was initially influenced by Jo\u00e3o Gilberto, but from the beginning he was quite innovative. The aforementioned song, M\u00e1s que Nada, was his first big hit in Brazil, and also one of the most popular Portuguese-language songs in the United States to this day. The song reached such a point that it was performed by renowned jazz players, such as Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzie Gilespie or Al Jarreau.<\/div>\n

In the 1970s he released his most esoteric and experimental albums, mainly the albums “A T\u00e1bua de Esmeraldas” in 1972, “Solta o Pav\u00e3o” in 1975 and “Africa Brasil” in 1976, which were not popular and were barely considered by a minority in their time, but today they are considered classics. In 1989, Jorge Ben changed his record company and also his stage name, which was changed to Jorge Benjor (or Jorge Ben Jor). At the time, they said the reason was numerology, (and in their own words, “just a marketing suggestion”), but in truth, the change was due to copyright issues. From this period, his music leaned more towards pop, but kept swing.<\/div>\n

He has a habit of sleeping between seven in the morning and four in the afternoon, preferring to compose at night, when he feels most inspired. He is used to always appearing in white clothes, for a mere matter of taste, and not superstition. Jorge Ben Jor is undoubtedly an important character in the history of Brazilian music, considered the father of samba-rock. But still, try to keep it simple. He defines himself as an \u201curban and suburban poet\u201d.<\/div>\n
