Naci\u00f3 en Dallas, Texas. Creci\u00f3 escuchando el soul de los ’70 y comenz\u00f3 a vivir el hip hop de los ’80, pero tambi\u00e9n est\u00e1 muy influida por grandes del jazz como Billie Holiday. Su verdadero nombre es Erica Abi Wright, curs\u00f3 estudios en una escuela de arte, y a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s estuvo un tiempo dedicada a la docencia, hasta que en 1994 apareci\u00f3 en un show de D’Angelo. El m\u00e1nager de D’Angelo, Kedar Massenburg, qued\u00f3 impresionado por la actuaci\u00f3n y la contrat\u00f3 para hacer una versi\u00f3n a d\u00fao del tema de Marvin Gaye y Tammi Terrell “Your Precious Love”. En poco tiempo fich\u00f3 para la discogr\u00e1fica Entertainment, comenz\u00f3 a grabar su debut “Baduizm” bajo la producci\u00f3n de Kedar Massenburg, y la compa\u00f1\u00eda de Ron Carter, contrabajista de jazz, en alguno de los temas. El primer sencillo “On & on” se convirti\u00f3 en un hit a principios de 1997, y en marzo el \u00e1lbum ya hab\u00eda llegado al n\u00famero uno. En el \u00e1lbum hab\u00eda una conjunci\u00f3n de neo soul, jazz y rap que lo hacen una gran pieza musical. Gan\u00f3 dos Grammy en 1997, uno al mejor \u00e1lbum de R&B y otro a la mejor interpretaci\u00f3n vocal femenina de R&B.<\/div>\n

He was born in Dallas, Texas. She grew up listening to the soul of the ’70s and began to experience the hip hop of the’ 80s, but she is also heavily influenced by jazz greats like Billie Holiday. Her real name is Erica Abi Wright, she studied at an art school, and years later she spent a time teaching, until in 1994 she appeared on a D’Angelo show. D’Angelo’s manager Kedar Massenburg was impressed by the performance and hired her to do a duet version of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s “Your Precious Love.” In a short time he signed for the record company Entertainment, he began to record his debut “Baduizm” under the production of Kedar Massenburg, and the company of Ron Carter, jazz double bass player, in some of the songs. The first single “On & on” became a hit in early 1997, and by March the album had already reached number one. On the album there was a conjunction of neo soul, jazz and rap that makes it a great piece of music. She won two Grammys in 1997, one for Best R&B Album and one for Best R&B Female Vocal Performance.<\/div>\n
