En 1962 su tema instrumental “Stranger on the Shore” (Un extra\u00f1o en la playa) se convirti\u00f3 en el sencillo m\u00e1s vendido del a\u00f1o en el Reino Unido, manteni\u00e9ndose durante 50 semanas en las listas de \u00e9xitos brit\u00e1nicas. Alcanz\u00f3 tambi\u00e9n el n\u00famero 1 de la lista Billboard Hot 100 en Estados Unidos en 1962.<\/div>\r\n

Naci\u00f3 en Pensford, Somerset en 1929. Aunque su padre intent\u00f3 ense\u00f1arle a tocar el piano, el joven Bilk prefer\u00eda jugar al f\u00fatbol. Su naturaleza inquieta le llev\u00f3 perder dos dientes en una pelea y parte de un dedo en un accidente con un trineo, lo que afect\u00f3 a su forma de tocar el clarinete.<\/div>\r\n

Tras finalizar su etapa escolar estuvo trabajando un tiempo en una f\u00e1brica de cigarrillos de Bristol, antes de ingresar en la unidad de ingenieros del Ej\u00e9rcito brit\u00e1nico y ser destinado al Canal de Suez. All\u00ed aprendi\u00f3 a tocar el clarinete despu\u00e9s de que un amigo zapador le regalase uno que hab\u00eda comprado en un bazar. Posteriormente, Bilk consigui\u00f3 un instrumento de mayor calidad facilitado por el Ej\u00e9rcito, que conserv\u00f3 tras su desmovilizaci\u00f3n. Una vez finalizado su servicio militar comenz\u00f3 a trabajar como herrero en el negocio de su t\u00edo.<\/div>\r\n

He was born in Pensford, Somerset in 1929. Although his father tried to teach him to play the piano, the young Bilk preferred to play football. His restless nature led to him losing two teeth in a fight and part of a finger in a sled accident, which affected his clarinet playing.<\/div>\r\n

After completing his school years, he spent time working in a cigarette factory in Bristol, before joining the British Army engineering unit and being assigned to the Suez Canal. There he learned to play the clarinet after a sapper friend gave him one that he had bought in a bazaar. Subsequently, Bilk obtained a higher quality instrument provided by the Army, which he kept after his demobilization. After completing his military service, he began working as a blacksmith in his uncle’s business.<\/div>\r\n
